When Disaster Strikes: Learning and Development at Mercy Corps
Anna Young, Director of Strategy and Learning, Mercy Corps, Portland, Oregon

30% of total revenue, including sponsorships and registration fees, will be donated to Mercy Corps to support their humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

Intended Audience
Anyone at any level in the workplace learning field!

Overview
Learning and development professionals play a critical role in responding to organizational change and crisis. At Mercy Corps, where "helping turn crisis into opportunity" is everyday practice, staff must be prepared to quickly mobilize and deploy on a massive scale amidst the chaos. Similar principles apply to all organizations in the nonprofit, public and private sector where emergencies and changes of different nature and scale happen every day.

With a keen interest and commitment to organizational learning, Mercy Corps is rated one of the most effective international relief and development organizations in the world. ASTD-Cascadia is honored to support Portland-based Mercy Corps' Haitian relief efforts by hosting Anna Young, Mercy Corps’ Director of Strategy and Learning, in an interactive workshop to learn more about:

• the role of learning and development in an organization such as Mercy Corps,
• how learning and development is affected when disaster strikes, and
• how a commitment to organizational learning over the past several years has positively affected Mercy Corps’ ability to fulfill its mission.

Outcomes

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of learning and development in an organization such as Mercy Corps
  • Recognize how learning and development is affected when disaster strikes
  • Learn how a commitment to organizational learning over the past several years has positively affected Mercy Corps’ ability to fulfill its mission
  • Develop novel ways to capture and share learning, including communities of practice, changing the culture of learning, and collaborating on field studies.

Although she has delivered many training courses in Design, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms. Young’s main interest lies where emergency response, local capacity building and conflict management intersect. She believes in setting strategic direction and driving organizational learning through analysis and research into (and subsequent application of) promising and best practices in relief and development.

Ms. Young has extensive international experience including managing an integrated relief and transitional development program in Maluku which provided relief and economic development assistance to conflict affected populations by working with local partner organizations. She has designed and implemented integrated approaches to development combining innovation across different fields (emergency, development, conflict management) and has developed field studies analyzing community-based approaches in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Indonesia and Georgia.

Ms. Young is originally from Southern England but now lives in Portland, OR. She has a Master's degree in French and German from Oxford University and a Post Graduate degree in Secondary Education. In her free time she enjoys anything involving cross country skis, hiking boots a tent or a kayak.
