Push Past PowerPoint: Parts 1 and 2
with Jennifer Dryden

Intended Audience

Have you ever walked into meeting, conference, or workshop and said to yourself: "If I'm subjected to one more tedious, bullet-ridden presentation I will leave this profession forever"? If so, then this is the workshop for you!

Overview

  • Fact: PowerPoint is the most common presentation tool used by companies, universities, governments, and even K-12 schools. Use it wisely!
  • Fact: Working memory is impaired when people are forced to listen to a presentation and read the words simultaneously. Stop talking; show fewer words!
  • Fact: Your audience will be "with you" or "against you" 30 seconds into your presentation; design and delivery matter. WIIFM?!?
  • Fact: Most people would rather have a root canal than sit through another conventional PowerPoint presentation. Obviously!

This workshop will be a two-part series. The first session will be the informational presentation with hands-on activities, video, discussion, and lecture. We'll review how you present information (PowerPoint being the most common and most studied but the principles in this workshop apply to any method of communicating your ideas and knowledge).

The second session will have each attendee do a 5-minute presentation and receive feedback and comments from the other attendees in the group. Class size for each session is limited to 20 participants. Participants must attend both sessions. The sessions cannot be split between two people.

FIRST SESSION: Come find out how to take your presentations to the next level. Learn how to use visual design techniques in your slides (for whatever technology you use) to capture your audience's attention and keep it throughout the duration of your presentation. Discover why engaging your audience's Whole Brain is crucial to effective communication and how to turn it on (and keep it turned on). You will also be exposed to a plethora of amazing resources (mostly free, some insanely cheap) that will magically transform your boring, bullet-ridden slides into a memorable communication tool. Step-by-step instructions for using the techniques shown during the session will be available to everyone. You will have a presentation to work on during the two-week interim period before the second session

SECOND SESSION: Two weeks after the first session, all participants will reconvene and have 5 minutes to give a presentation to the group. All attendees are required to participate both as presenters and commenters. This will be a fantastic opportunity to hone your skills on a work-related presentation topic and get valuable feedback from your peers in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Prework: Important!
