When people ask me about my role as ASTD-Cascadia’s VP of Programs, the first thing I tell them is how lucky I am to work with such an amazing group of individuals. Behind the Series, Conference, and Monthly Program offerings, volunteers put in countless hours to ensure quality and affordable learning opportunities for anyone interested in our profession.

One of these individuals is Susan Van de Water, Associate Vice President of Series. Involved in the Chapter for several years, Susan oversees a team of 20+ volunteers and instructors. Here’s what she has to say about our Series Events.

“ASTD Cascadia Chapter has a long-standing relationship with Portland State University offering a Series of three two-day courses for the learning and development professional. These courses offer an excellent opportunity for those in the profession, and those wishing to learn more, while also having the opportunity to earn PSU course credit at a significant discount. Offered twice a year, these courses are Fundamentals of Training, eLearning Strategies, and a new offering, Managing Learning and Development Projects."

Fundamentals of Training is intended for those new in the workplace learning field and for those who need an overview. Topics include: Needs Assessment, Presentation Skills, Training Methodologies, and Course Design.

eLearning Strategies is for those wishing to break into the eLearning arena, training professionals who are planning on introducing or expanding the use of eLearning in their organization's training efforts, and senior leaders and training managers who are responsible for funding or approving eLearning in their organizations. The topics include: Foundation Concepts in eLearning, Designing eLearning Programs, The eLearning Development Process, and Learning Management Systems - Is Your Business Ready? We currently have an excellent volunteer opportunity for the role of Director of eLearning Strategies. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Susan Van de Water, Associate VP of Series, at susanvdw@comcast.net.

Managing Learning and Development Projects is intended for learning and development professionals who want to excel in their ability to effectively manage learning and development programs. Integral to this task is good project development and implementation skills. This course will offer practical knowledge and tools in project management as it applies to learning and development as well as other vital aspects of program oversight. Currently in development, this course will be offered for the first time in December 2010.

Please visit our Events page for further details and to register for any of these great events.
