    Five Worlds of Learning 2.0

    By Christine Martell | October 9, 2007

Lance Dublin presentation at the Brandon Hall Innovations in Learning Conference (IIL07)

I presented at the Innovations in Learning conference at the end of September, and got to attend some great sessions while I was there. I wrote about my session on What is Innovation in Learning? and another I attended by Olavur Ellefson about Oilsim on my blog. ASTD-Cascadia member Seniye Groff was also a presenter at the conference, and I heard she did a great session too.

You can download the slidedeck on Five Worlds of Learning from Lance’s site. You will have to enter an email address to get to his download page, and he has lots of interesting things to offer there. The session is listed as Five New Worlds Innovation.

This was a double session. One of the first things Lance did was to make sure everybody in the room was clear about what he was going to cover, and gave people the opportunity to select another session if it would serve them better. He explained the differences between the first half and the second, and there were people who left the first half and came back later. Everyone really appreciated this clarity, and his understanding that we were all selecting from a huge menu of options. Of course, there were people standing in the hall, so it also served to make a little more space. It was still an overflow crowd.

We need to change our thinking

Like so many of the presenters at this conference, Lance really stressed the need to focus on the people and learning and not on the technology. He talked about how learning itself has not changed, it’s just been the way we support it. He also reminded us that as a profession we are still conceptually stuck at book learning; we gather knowledge and give it to other people. Can we move beyond?

    Five Worlds of Learning 2.0

This session was packed full of all sorts of great information. Lance clearly has thought through the overview of opportunity we have as learning professionals to embrace the changes we are being presented with. The main focus of his message was an overview of the new realms we have to work with. Lance Dublin

    Are you ready?

The only way you really understand these new tools well enough to use them effectively is to participate. The collective lenses are shifting. The diversity of thought that comes from collaborating globally is where we are moving if we aren’t already there.

    Want to learn more?

Tony Karrer announced a free online conference, Corporate Learning: Trends and Innovation Nov. 15-20, 2007. Lots of familiar names on the presentation list, and it looks like you can participate in directing the topics and will be interacting with the presenters in real time.

What do we need to do as a professional association?
Over the last two years we have:

What else would you like to see? Do you feel like you know what you need to know to utilize these new tools in your work?
