At some point, it all came together–and I did not even do that much!

Christine’s stories inspired me to blog. My own personal fear of blogging stopped me. And so on and so forth. I wanted to be “a blogger” and use “the google” and figure out how to download an mp3. An mp…what? I have noticed that as I get older (and hopefully wiser), I get a bit more timid about trying new things. The trying new things part is hard for me. The thing that makes me overcome trying new things is the people that I get to know and learn from in the process. I am a volunteer Board member at ASTD. I did not fall into this role. I met people that taught me once again how important our jobs are as trainers are and then, knew that I wanted to volunteer. Christine’s blog about riding her bike made me think more about her process and how it relates to volunteering.
“Knowing” versus experiencing–what have I experienced from volunteering with ASTD?
- An immense body of training knowledge at my fingertips that no web site or book could give me
- ASTD Cascadia members generously share the knowledge and experience with me which makes me job and life easier and more fulfilling
Knowing what to expect about being an ASTD Cascadia volunteer
- I read the ASTD Cascadia web site about what to expect from being a volunteer. It has detailed volunteer position descriptions that tell me how much time I am committing to when I sign up to be a volunteer
- In addition, the website tells me what I will get–the knowledge and experience that I will get if I decide to volunteer is right there on the website–this was a great help for me at the beginning since I wanted to align my volunteer work with my personal and professional goals
Use the right tools to be a an ASTD Cascadia volunteer
- ASTD Cascadia has a dedicated Board that helped me gain the tools to be a beneficial volunteer
- I also had the ASTD Cascadia web site at my fingertips that is chunked with enormous amounts of helpful information
At some point it all comes together
I started out as an ASTD Cascadia volunteer to gain professional skills that would help me in my career. It all came together when I:
- Gained new professional networking and training skills
- Helped mentor other trainers
- Made new professional contacts in my field.
I am an HR Generalist. One of the reasons that I took this job was because I wanted to have a better understanding of the department that trainers usually fall under. At some point in my HR investigation and much loved new career path, I discovered that being an ASTD Cascadia volunteer helps me bridge the gap between my HR and training life. At some point, it all came together.
